Roanoke City VINELink Coverage
Virginia Jail VINE covers participating local and regional jails. For a person held by the Roanoke City Sheriff, Virginia VINELink is the relevant person-search and notification route when the agency supplies the record. It can show the custody status or event reported by that participating agency and offer registration for future changes.
VADOC’s current state-prison notification system is NAAVI, short for Notification And Assistance for Victim Inclusion. It has victim-eligibility rules. A Roanoke City person transferred from the local jail to VADOC crosses into another custody and notification system. Enrollment in local VINE does not automatically enroll anyone in NAAVI. First verify the transfer, then use the service operated by the actual custodian.
VINELink is not a historical archive of all former Roanoke City residents. It also is not the federal inmate locator. A missing record can result from spelling, delay, transfer, protected data, nonparticipation, or removal from the active dataset. None of those possibilities alone proves release.
| Custody system | Correct notification or lookup route |
|---|---|
| Roanoke City local jail | Virginia Jail VINE plus Sheriff confirmation |
| Virginia state prison | VADOC locator and NAAVI when eligible |
| Federal prison | BOP Inmate Locator, not VINELink |
| Immigration detention | ICE locator and case-specific confirmation |
Search a Roanoke City Inmate
A useful VINELink result begins with a precise identity match. Similar names are common, and a record from a nearby jail may concern another jurisdiction. Roanoke City and Roanoke County are separate. Western Virginia Regional Jail serves Roanoke County and other participating jurisdictions, not the ordinary Roanoke City jail population.
- Open Virginia VINELink and choose the people or offender search.
- Enter the legal name or offender ID as the live form permits. Try a known legitimate alias only when needed.
- Keep the search within Virginia and use the agency or facility filter when offered.
- Compare the name, ID, descriptors, agency, and facility before choosing a result. Never select on name alone.
- Open the matched record and copy the exact custody label, location, agency, event, and update time shown.
- If several records remain plausible, contact the Roanoke City detention operation before registering for one person.
The Roanoke City released inmate search path explains the durable Sheriff, court, and VADOC sources when VINELink does not resolve the match. A current Roanoke City resident search shows current custody, while the Sheriff’s release or movement record confirms what occurred after a person left that display.
The official Virginia VINELink screen supplies the current person-search entry point and notification choices.
The live interface should control the exact search choices and labels because delivery options and screen wording can change.
Note: Search the independent Roanoke City agency, not Roanoke County, unless the custody record itself identifies a transfer or different booking authority.
Roanoke City VINELink Release Fields
The official sources do not promise one universal label for every released result or permanent access to every former resident. Read the record exactly as displayed. A custody event can describe release, transfer, or another change. If the event is a transfer, the person may remain confined under a new agency.
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Name or offender ID | Identity fields used to distinguish the matched record. |
| Custody status | The current wording supplied by the participating agency. |
| Agency or facility | The custodian or location tied to the record. |
| Descriptors | Available identity details used to reduce same-name errors. |
| Custody event | A reported release, transfer, or other status change when supplied. |
| Notification option | The route to enroll for later events on that matched record. |
A VINE result should not be turned into a projected-release calculator. VADOC handles state sentence calculations, and the city Sheriff handles many local jail computations. Nor should a no-result be treated as an affirmative release. For proof, obtain the Roanoke City Sheriff’s actual release or movement entry, or the VADOC release record if state custody applies.
A court disposition can explain why release was authorized, yet its timestamp may not equal the jail-door time. Keep the court action, agency processing, and receiving-custodian intake in sequence.
Register Roanoke City Release Alerts
Registration should start only after the identity and custody agency are confirmed. The current screen may offer telephone, text, email, TTY, or app delivery. Follow the method choices that appear on the matched person record and compare them with the official VINE workflow FAQ.
- Select the notification or registration option on the correct person record.
- Choose one of the delivery methods displayed and enter the destination accurately.
- For telephone notices, create the requested PIN and keep it private but available.
- Complete the confirmation step shown for the selected channel and save the registration confirmation.
- Register more than one destination if the official screen allows it and that is useful.
- When an alert arrives, write down the status, agency, and time, then confirm the event with the holding agency.
The official VINE brochure explains that entering the PIN during an automated phone call acknowledges the notice and stops repeat calls. Unanswered calls may continue until acknowledgment or for up to twenty-four hours. The source ties the PIN to phone acknowledgment. Email and other digital channels should be described only according to the live confirmation prompts.

Free custody-status notifications
VINE can reduce the need to keep checking a current roster, but it cannot guarantee advance notice. Data begin with participating justice agencies, and transport or rebooking may trigger more than one event. Always identify which event the message reports.
Note: A release alert may describe the end of one agency’s custody while a transfer begins another agency’s custody at once.
Confirm Roanoke City VINELink Alerts
VINE is a free notification tool, not a certified release order. Its record may lag, an event may be revised, and a transfer can look like a release from the first facility. Call the Roanoke City Adult Detention Center and ask whether the person left for the community or moved to another jail, VADOC, federal custody, immigration custody, a hospital, or another authority.
If the person entered VADOC custody, use the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator for the next stage. A future release-related date can change. A past date paired with a released or discharged state status is stronger evidence, though the underlying VADOC record remains the best confirmation.
For a durable Roanoke City record, ask the Sheriff for the existing booking, release, or movement entry. Include the legal name, date of birth or booking identifier if known, and a narrow date range. Request the actual release or transfer time, authority, and destination as recorded. This request answers a different question from VINELink: it seeks the agency record behind the local custody change.
The Roanoke City Resident Search is also limited to current custody. Its displayed records were marked “In Custody,” and the interface had no released-person tab or release-date filter when researched. A person’s disappearance from that screen and a VINELink no-result are both leads. Neither is an affirmative release record.
Federal custody requires the BOP Inmate Locator; the Bureau’s locator information explains its federal scope. A BOP result can say “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” and show a release date, but that only closes the federal custody question. Another agency may still hold or supervise the person. ICE’s locator focuses on current immigration detention and is not a historical release ledger.
Resolve conflicting records by chronology. Keep the exact wording and access time, then call the most recent known custodian. The court order, jail processing, transport, and receiving-agency intake may all occur at different times.
Roanoke City VINE and NAAVI
The local-to-state handoff is the most important Virginia notification distinction. Virginia Jail VINE is open for offered local-jail notifications. VADOC directs qualifying state-prison victim notifications to NAAVI through its Victim Services program. Registration in one system does not carry across the transfer.
When a Roanoke City record shows movement to VADOC, first confirm that the state agency received the person. Search the VADOC locator for status and location. An eligible victim can then contact VADOC Victim Services notifications about NAAVI enrollment. The research lists 1-800-560-4292 and 804-674-3243, with weekday service from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
This split keeps the alert tied to the agency that can report the next custody event. The Roanoke City Sheriff confirms the local departure; VADOC confirms the state intake and later state status. If no transfer occurred, the local Sheriff release record remains the durable source.
Roanoke City Registry Limits
The Virginia State Police Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry is a separate post-release system for people who have a statutory duty to register. It may remain searchable after incarceration, but only for that legally defined group. It is not part of VINELink and is not a general list of released Roanoke City inmates.
A registry record may provide identifying and registration details allowed by law. It cannot establish the exact time or legal basis of a jail release. Absence from the registry says nothing about whether a person left local custody, because most jail residents are outside its scope.
Use the registry only when registration status is the actual question. For local release proof, return to the Sheriff’s release or movement record. For custody alerts, use VINE. For state custody or supervision, use VADOC and the appropriate notification channel.
Note: Each public system answers a narrow question, so combining results requires care about agency, time, and legal status.
